What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing content so that AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity cite it directly in their answers. Unlike traditional SEO which targets Google's ranking algorithm, GEO targets the passage retrieval and citation selection logic inside large language models. The goal is citation rate and brand mention rate, not blue-link clicks.

  • 59 words - ideal passage length.
  • Heading is question-shaped.
  • Contains named entity.

How do AI assistants pick which sources to cite?

AI assistants use a two-stage process. First, a retrieval model pulls 10-50 candidate passages from the web or a trained index. Second, a ranking model scores each passage on entity strength, schema clarity, self-containment and factual density, then the generator picks 1-5 passages to quote or paraphrase with inline citations.

  • 50 words - ideal passage length.
  • Heading is question-shaped.
  • Contains named entity.

Why does schema markup matter so much?

JSON-LD schema is one of the top three signals in the passage ranker. It tells the assistant exactly what type of content this is (Article, FAQPage, Product, HowTo) without requiring any inference. Pages with valid schema get pulled into answer cards 2-3x more often than equivalent pages with no schema.

  • Heading is question-shaped.
  • Contains named entity.

How it works

Paste either your rendered HTML (containing H2/H3 sections) or markdown-style text with ## headings. We split into passages, then score each on word count, self-containment, pronoun references, anaphoric anchors, answer shape and entity presence. Each passage gets an independent 0-100 score so you can see which sections would survive the citation ranker.

Why passage-level matters more than page-level

  • The ranker operates at the passage tier. Your page-level SEO signals barely matter - what gets cited is a 40-120 word chunk.
  • "It" kills citations. Passages that start with a pronoun referring to the previous section can't be lifted in isolation, so the ranker deprioritizes them.
  • Every passage is a separate shot. A page with 6 self-contained passages gets 6 chances to be cited. A page with 1 long essay gets 1.
